Modern views for your

new generation products

IDE Metal offers a different service to its customers with its fully automatic polishing unit to provide the decorative appearance of stainless steel sheets, as well as the sale of material from stock.

ADVANTAGES

  • It gives a better appearance to your products due to its decorative surface feature.
  • Undesirable views such as scratches, rust and other stains on the surface can be eliminated.
  • The cost is low.
  • Fine scratches on the surface will be less obvious than the flat surface.
  • Polishing degree is adjustable.

Ide Metal has an infrastructure to produce the fastest solution to its customer needs with dry polishing and PVC coating line.

Products with raw surface get surface appearance by passing stone sandbars which can be changed as required. Since the sanding widths are more than the width of the grinded product and the product is grinded without stopping over the surface, a homogeneous surface is obtained at the end of the line.

Hot-Rolled and Cold-Rolled Steel

Product Group Symbol Processing Route Surface Condition Notes
Hot-Rolled 1U Hot-rolled, not heat-treated, not descaled Covered with mill scale Suitable for products intended for further processing,
such as strip for re-rolling.
1C Hot-rolled, heat-treated, not descaled Covered with mill scale Suitable for parts that will be descaled or machined at a later
production stage, or for certain heat-resistant applications.
1E Hot-rolled, heat-treated, mechanically descaled Scale-free The type of mechanical descaling, such as grinding or abrasive
blasting, depends on the steel grade and product. Unless otherwise
specified, the method is selected by the manufacturer.
1D Hot-rolled, heat-treated, pickled Scale-free A standard finish for most steel grades to provide corrosion
resistance. It is also suitable as a finish for further processing.
Grinding marks may be present. It is not as smooth as 2D or 2B.
Cold-Rolled 2H Work-hardened Bright Cold-worked to achieve a higher strength level.
2C Cold-rolled, heat-treated, not descaled Covered with a thin, smooth scale formed during heat treatment Suitable for parts that will be descaled or machined at a later
production stage, or for certain heat-resistant applications.
2E Cold-rolled, heat-treated, mechanically descaled Rough and dull Generally applied to steels with a scale layer resistant to
cleaning with chemical solutions. Pickling may follow.
2D Cold-rolled, heat-treated, pickled Smooth Ductile, but not as smooth as 2B or 2R.
2B Cold-rolled, heat-treated, pickled and skin-pass rolled Smoother than 2D A common finish for most steel grades, providing good corrosion
resistance, smoothness and flatness. It is also commonly used as
a finish for further processing. The skin-pass operation may be
carried out by tension levelling.
2R Cold-rolled, bright annealed Smooth, bright and reflective Smoother and brighter than 2B. It is also commonly used as a
finish for further processing.
2Q Cold-rolled, hardened and tempered, scale-free Scale-free Either hardened and tempered in a protective atmosphere or
descaled after heat treatment.
Special Finishes 1G or 2G Ground See footnote e. Grit grade or surface roughness may be specified.
The finish has a unidirectional texture and is not highly reflective.
1J or 2J Brushed or dull polished Smoother than a ground finish. See footnote e. The grade of the brush or polishing belt, or the surface roughness,
may be specified. The finish has a non-reflective, unidirectional texture.
1K or 2K Satin polished See footnote e. Special requirements may apply to J-type finishes to ensure
adequate corrosion resistance in marine and exterior architectural
applications. For transverse test pieces, the clean surface shall
have Ra < 0.5 µm.
1P or 2P Cold-rolled, heat-treated and textured by skin-pass rolling Uniform, non-reflective matt surface Heat treatment is carried out by bright annealing or by annealing
followed by pickling.
1M Patterned or embossed The design shall be agreed upon. The reverse side is flat. Chequered plate used for flooring.
2M Finely textured surface used mainly for architectural applications.
2W Corrugated The design shall be agreed upon. Used to increase strength and/or for decorative purposes.
2L Coloured The colour shall be agreed upon.
1S or 2S Surface-coated Coated, for example with tin or aluminium.

a. Not all processing routes and final surface conditions are available for every steel grade.

b. The first digit of the designation indicates:
  1 for hot-rolled and
  2 for cold-rolled.

c. A skin-pass operation may have been carried out.

d. Unless otherwise specified at the time of ordering, only one surface is considered.

e. Surface characteristics may vary within each finish designation. More specific requirements, such as grit grade and surface roughness, may need to be agreed upon between the manufacturer and the customer.

Surface Conditions According to ASTM

Hot-rolled, annealed and descaled. It has a rough, matt surface.

Hot-rolled, annealed, and descaled. The surface finish is poor.

It has undergone heat treatment and has been chemically descaled. The final finishing process has been carried out. The surface is smoother than 2D. As it offers good resistance to corrosion and has a scale-free surface, it is suitable for a wide range of applications.

The surface has been treated with 100-grit abrasive.

The surface has been treated with 120–150-grit abrasive.

It has a more matt satin finish than No. 4.

It has a very shiny and reflective surface. However, there are grinding marks on the surface.

It has a very bright and reflective surface. Any grinding marks on the surface have been removed. It is described as a mirror finish.
